Dr. John Kelley is involved with the project to develop a Unified Forecast System, a community-based, coupled, comprehensive Earth modeling system to improve both weather and coastal ocean forecasting and thus better support marine navigation, marine weather and storm surge prediction, and bathymetric surveys. He works with CCOM's Data Visualization Research Lab to improve the display of real-time model forecast guidance from National Ocean Service's and National Weather Service's operational oceanographic and weather prediction forecast modeling systems. He teaches the marine weather section of the Seamanship class for graduate students in ocean mapping and engineering during the Spring Semester.

Dr. Kelley was member of the NOAA/National Ocean Service/Coast Survey Development Lab's Coastal and Marine Modeling Branch for over 27 years where he was involved in the development, testing, and implementation of NOS's operational numerical ocean forecast modeling systems for U.S. waters including the Great Lakes. He was the project manager for nowCOAST, a GIS-based web mapping portal to NOAA's real-time coastal observations, warnings, model forecast guidance, and forecasts. He was also involved with NOAA's development of S-100 products to support Precision Marine Navigation. Before joining NOS, Dr. Kelley was an UCAR postdoctoral scientist with the Ocean Modeling Branch at the NWS' National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) in Maryland where he developed and implemented a data assimilation system for NOAA's operational Coastal Ocean Forecast System. He has a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences from the Ohio State University and M.S. in Meteorology and M.P.A. from Penn State University.
