Abstract
Control co-design (CCD) has become a powerful paradigm in the total optimization of the dynamics of a system against a defined performance goal. This presentation will motivate the use of CCD for Wave Energy Converters (WECs) with their dynamically interacting subsystems and introduce the dedicated open-source WecOptTool. WecOptTool was developed to make CCD accessible to the WEC developer and research community.

Bio

Dr. Daniel Gaebele is a R&D electrical engineer at Sandia National Laboratories’ Water Power Technologies Program. His research focuses on wave energy converter (WEC) control co-design and control co-optimization, sociotechnical assessments of WECs for blue economy applications, and WEC seasonal deployments. Dr. Gaebele received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering cybernetics from the University of Stuttgart, Germany, and a Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from Oregon State University, before he joined Sandia as postdoctoral appointee in 2021.
