Each summer, the Hydrographic Field Course gives students the opportunity to plan and execute a mapping expedition along the New England coast. Aboard the R/V Gulf Surveyor and under the supervision of Semme. Dijkstra, the students plan the survey, install equipment and sensors, complete the data collection, process the data, and write the final report.
In addition, the students create a budget and plan patch tests, shore lining, data QA/QC procedures (cross line analysis, junctioning surveys). On shore, they install and verify a tide gauge and they verify the operation of a GNSS RTK base station.
Over the years, the Summer Hydro students have mapped hundreds of miles of seafloor from the Gulf of Maine to Rye Harbor.
