Data collected with the Simrad ME70 installed on the NOAA FSV Oscar Dyson in the Shelikof Strait (Alaska) in March, 2008. The backscattered signal above the bottom is walleye pollack. Note that only every 5th ping is shown.

Data collected with the Reson 7125 (400 kHz) on the R/V Hugh Sharp in the Gulf of Maine in October, 2006. The backscatter signal (red and yellow) correspond to bubbles generated by open ocean breaking waves.

Laminaria (kelp) backscatter data Data collected with the Reson 7125 (400 kHz) on a lobster boat on Cashes Ledge in the Gulf of Maine in June 2006. The backscatter signal above the bottom – approximately 2 m thick – is from Laminaria (kelp).

Single and Multibeam data of a school of Atlantic herring A school of Atlantic herring imaged repeatedly on Georges Bank in the Gulf of Maine. The red surfaces are extracted from the multibeam data, and the vertical slice is from a single-beam echosounder. The data was collected with the Reson 7125 (400 kHz) on a the R/V Hugh Sharp in September 2006. Note how much is missed by standard sonar
